Writing - short story about love
You will find the instructions in your hand-out Star-crossed lovers
Movie - Brokeback Mountain
More information will be given to you during class. Your questions that you are to discuss can be found in your hand-out Star-crossed lovers.
Prepare your oral presentation/discussion in your group.
1.Brokeback Mountain is about not fitting in and being forced to live a lie because of the intolerance of the social society. But what is it that keeps Ennis and Jack from “coming out”? In what way does society create limitations?
2.In order to not reveal themselves and to not break the social patterns, Ennis and Jack have to, as a survival strategy, play certain roles to fit in. We have all faced these questions at some part in our lives; Who am I? Who am I in the eyes of others? Reflect on these questions based on concepts such as identity and roles. Can you relate to this “roleplay”?
3.Love can come in many shapes, it can be about the love of a partner, about your kids, about your dog etc. How would the student describe love? What shape does love take in the movie? In what ways can love be expressed? What is love in relation to sex? What is it that makes you like each other?
4.Discuss with the class the movie’s description of “manliness”, is there something that is looked upon as typically male or female? What is it? What sets the boundaries for what you’re allowed to do as a man respectively woman?
5.Discuss gender roles in media. Do Jack and Ennis differ from the ways men usually are represented in the Movies?
6.Describe Alma and Laureen, what are their dreams? What does Alma and Laureen mean to Ennis and Jack? Why do they get married? The movie puts an end to the traditional family-concept. What is a family? Does a family have to look a certain way – for example mother, father, child?
