Advanced English Year 9 Overview

Kvarngärdesskolan, Uppsala · Senast uppdaterad: 24 september 2018

The Advanced English Program is an accelerated program. By the end of year 9 the pupils in the Advanced English Program will have completed work equivalent to the high school course, English 5. In the spring they will be taking the English 5 National Tests. At the end of the school year the pupils will be given two grades in English: the first is based on the grading criteria for 9th grade, and the second is based on the grading criteria for English 5.

Both productive (speaking and writing) and receptive (listening and reading) skills are assessed.  In addition, a certain knowledge about the countries and customs of the English-speaking world is important.

Doing the year we will be using two different textbooks at times.  These are Wings 9, and Q-skills 4 (Oxford)   In general however, the course is based on projects and themes.

  • Speaking skills – We will use English at all times (except for an occasional exercise in translation. Discussions – in pairs, small groups and whole class—are an integral part of the program.  There will be individual presentations as well.
  • Writing skills—Exercises to practice writing are central to the course. In addition, we will discuss grammar in conjunction with writing assignments, as understanding of grammar facilitates clear writing.  Opportunities for  peer critique are important; often one of the first steps to being able to improve one’s own writing is recognizing difficulties in another’s.
  • Listening skills – Active listening will be vital in the classroom. At times there will be exercises in listening for specific information.
  •  Reading skills – We will devote a great deal of time to reading, as it is only through practice that fluent reading develops. With the increase in technology, most people spend less time reading. Not only will we read more advanced texts, but active reading strategies will be emphasized. Nuances in a text are often conveyed by vocabulary, so attention will be paid to increasing vocabulary.
  • The English-speaking world – We will discuss current events in the English speaking world. We will study how the English language originated. We will also study some aspects of the history of English literature.

Syllabus

The Swedish School Board encourages pupils to influence their lessons.  Because of this, many of the specifics of the 9th grade Advanced English Program will be decided together with the pupils. The following areas will be included, however.

  • Pupils will make individual presentations of a news item from the English speaking world.
  • Pupils will plan, execute and then present a project during a 5-week period. The type of presentation will be up to each individual.
  • We will work with active reading techniques during the year. Pupils will read several short stories, two novels, poetry as well as some nonfiction articles.
  • We will consider the Victorian age in English literature, using excerpt from famous works. We will watch a film set during that time and analyze it.
  • We will continue to work with the standard essay form.
  • Pupils will write summaries based on newspaper articles. We will practice paraphrasing and discuss the perils of plagiarism.
  • Pupils will study grammar in conjunction with writing. However, we will review the basics of capitalization and punctuation.  We will study the passive, modal verbs and sentence structure, in particular, complex sentences and subordinators.
  • We will study how the English language originated.
  • We will look in detail at translation of specialized vocabulary in conjunction with the unit on crime in Wings 9.
  • We will work with idiomatic expressions to widen vocabulary. Pupils will investigate certain areas of vocabulary and become familiar with using a thesaurus.
