Bend it like Beckham

A comedy about bending the rules to reach your goal, Bend It Like Beckham explores the world of women's football, from kick-abouts in the park to freekicks in the Final. Set in Hounslow, West London and Hamburg, the film follows two 18 year olds with their hearts set on a future in professional soccer. Heart-stopping talent doesn't seem to be enough when your parents want you to hang up your football boots, find a nice boyfriend and learn to cook the perfect chapatti.

During the forthcoming weeks you´re going to watch a movie called "Bend it like Beckham". The film will be followed up by a writing assignment.

Planering

Try to discuss as carefully as you can the following questions. Your text should be narrative and reasoning. Think through your point of view and what you are going to write. Remember, give examples to prove your point and elaborate your answers!

• Why is it that one usually marries someone from the same country and culture? How many “mixed marriages” do you know about?

• Pinky is in many ways Jess’ opposite. Both are born and raised in London with both Indian and British culture as theirs. On the surface Pinky behaves more like an Indian woman should but is she really a typical Indian woman in every aspect? Make a list of the differences between the sisters when it comes to behaviour and the way they dress.

•  In most sports men and women compete separately – horseback riding is one exception. Discuss when is it reasonable to have gender splits within sports and when is it not?

• Joe explains that his dad has pushed his training so hard that he was injured for life. Jess wants to show Joe that she is strong and carries through a disciplinary running that Joe ordered with such seriousness that she runs even though she has sprained her ankle.
  To be a professional athlete comes with big and tough sacrifices, but it is toughest for those who don’t reach all the way. Many of the athletes, both man/boys and women/girls suffer from eating disorders, others use drugs to dope themselves to become better athletes.
  How can we deal with this? Whose responsibility is it? Have you got any own experiences when it comes to push yourself too hard when it comes to sports?
