We are going to read a short story written by Ernest Hemingway. I will give you the text during the English lesson. After having read the text I want you to make a vocabulary list of new words you find in the text. Also I want you to answer the following questions:

  1. Who are the main characters in this short story?
  2. Why are they going to an Indian camp?
  3. What profession has Nick's father?
  4. Why had the Indian woman been screaming for two days?
  5. How did the doctor help the woman?
  6. How could he operate without unaesthetic?
  7. What happened to Uncle George during the operation?
  8. What happended to the husband of the Indian woman?
  9. What does the doctor mean by saying: "they're usually the worst sufferers in these little affairs"?
  10. Why did Nick's father regret having brought him along to the Indian camp?
  11. Why do you Think, did Nick asked his father so many questions after the experience of witnessing a caesarian and a suicide?
  12. The last line of this short story ends this way: "He felt quite sure that he would never die"?

Ernest Hemingway was born in 1888 and died in 1961 (he committed suicide). He was an American author and journalist. In 1954 he received the Nobel Prize in literature. During his lifetime he wrote seven novels, six short story Collections and two non-fiction works. After his Death there were several works being published. He is considered to be one of the classics in American literature.

This short story - Indian Camp - is part of the Collection of short stories called "In our time", which was published in 1925 and marked the debut of the Young Ernest Hemingway.

Here are the names of the novels he wrote: Farewell to ams, The Sun also rises, the Old Man and the Sea etc.
