Focus: Reading a book

This assignment is about improving your reading, writing and speaking skills by summarizing and analyzing the book you have chosen to read.

 

You are going to read your book during class (five lessons) and answer the questions in the reading log after each reading occasion.  You can continue reading your book during your Autumn Break if you haven't finished it. Your oral presentation about the book should be ready to be exposed on  Wendesday and Thursday (Week 46).  You find more information in the attached document below.

Reading log 1

How far have you read? Page:

 

1. How does the novel start?

 

2. Do you think it is a good beginning? Why?

 

3. Was it easy or difficult to “get into” the book?

 

4. How do you like the novel so far? Explain why and motivate your answer.

 

5. Write a short summary of what has happened so far.

 

 Reading log 2

2. Choose one or two of the characters to describe. Ask yourself these questions:

Who is the character I am describing?

What do I think about his or her personality and why?

 

3. Describe what the person means to the novel and how he or she has been acting up until the point you have read.

 4. How do those actions make you feel? Try to describe them as carefully and detailed as possible and relate them to quotations/give examples from the novel.

2. Choose a quote from the book that you think is interesting, funny, irritating. Copy it and explain why you chose it. What happened before this quote and what happens afterwards?

 

3. What do you think about the author's description of the environment?

 

4. What do you think about the story so far? Why? Give examples and use quotes from the book!

 

Reading log 4

 

1. How far have you read? Page:

 

2. Almost all novels have conflicts of some kind. Sometimes they are between two or more people (external conflicts), and sometimes the conflict is within the characters themselves, (internal conflicts).

 

Try to find examples of both of these kinds of conflicts.

 

The character might for example be fighting with another character, and that would make an external conflict, or the character might be struggling with him- or herself over something he/she has done that he/she knows was wrong.

 

Describe these conflicts. Give examples and use quotes from the book to show what those conflicts are about

 

 

 

Reading log 5

 

 

1. What is the theme of the book (love conquers all, unhappy love, war, evil, the poor boy/girl reaching success...)? Give examples and use quotes from the book!

 

2. How do you like the ending? Why? Do you think the book should have ended in another way? Why/why not? If you want another ending, what would it be?

 

3.Try to sum up the book in five sentences.

 

4. What do you think about the book? Would you recommend it to somebody else? Why? Give examples and use quotes from the book!
