Students are required to write a pop song using garage band.

Structure

You can choose from two structures.

1) AABA (Verse, Verse, Bridge, Verse)

Suggested bars:
A - Verse - 16 bars
A - Verse - 16 bars
B - Bridge - 8 Bars
A - Verse - 16 bars

You must use the chords C, G, Am, F and repeat it for the B section.

This will not get you above a D grade. (20% of overall grade on this assessment)

2.)
(A) Intro - Less than 8 bars
(B) Verse - Maximum 16 bars (12 bars with pre-chorus)

(C) Chorus - 12-24 Bars
(D) Second Verse - Maximum 16 bars (12 bars with pre-chorus)

(E) Chorus - 12 bars
(F) Bridge - 8 bars
(G) Chorus X 2 - 12-24 bars

This can theoretically get you an A grade (20% of overall grade on this assessment)

The Chorus must consist of the chords C, G, Am, F repeated.

Instrumentation
You must have a minimum of 4 tracks and no more than 8 tracks. More tracks does not mean a better grade!

It is strongly suggested you have piano, drums, and bass.

You need to have a melody.

Remember the melody DOES NOT need to be complicated. The chorus needs to have a hook, i.e. something that is memorable, catchy and stays in your head.

Dynamics and expressive techniques
It’s important that there are clear dynamic differentiation between different parts of the song (Volume) and that each Verse is slightly varied, often the final verse is the most interesting.

Texture (layers)
Think about when you should have more layers. In terms of interest do you want to have your song like a bell curve or a constant incline of interest (your structure should help you with what type of curved interest you will have).

Pitch
Different pitches must be used ranging from low (bass) to high (piano has high notes and low notes). It does not have to be complicated, it has to make musical sense.

Duration
Variation in duration is also a good idea. Ranging from simple sustained notes to quick, short, sharp notes.

Marking breakdown
Structure - 20%
Dynamics - 20%
Melody - 20%
Harmonious instrumentation in each section - 40%

Week 40
a)  Have drum track down
b)  Record C, G, Amoll, F in Chorus (or B section in simple structure)
Week 41
a) Choose genre of music you want it to be.
b) Begin working on Intro and verses. Composing your own music here, either using samples or making your own chords (adding the instruments you want that are suitable for your genre). Suggested chords (if it suits your genre) - C, Dmoll, Emoll, F, G, Amin
Week 42
a) Write your melodies for the verse and chorus. Keep them simple, use repetition.
b) Make sure you have the tracks (instruments) finalised for what your want for the chorus and verse
Week 43
a) Working on the bridge. It is strongly suggested you have Bb in the bridge. (If this suits your genre)
Week 45
Editing.
Week 46
Final editing. Project is due Wed 3p.m.
