Travel around the English speaking world: yr 9, 2019 w.36-45 (w.40 = PRAO)

This project will give you the opportunity to learn more about the English speaking World (except the British Isles, the USA and Canada). In groups you will produce a travel show, in which you describe, compare and show the two countries from different continents you have chosen. You will also write three shorter travel blogs.

Tasks

Travel show (w.37-39 + 41)

In groups you are going to prepare, film and edit a travel show. In this travel show you have to portrait two different countries in which English is the official and the main spoken language. The countries have to be situated in two different continents of the world (Asia, South America, Europe, Africa, Oceania). Your show will be shown to the class so that everyone learns more about the different English speaking countries.

Need to be in the show:
• Short facts about the countries.
• Present interesting places to visit and things to do.
• Characteristic things for the country (e.g. the British people always talks about the weather).
• A comparison between the two countries your group has chosen, showing pros and cons for visiting the different countries, but also similarities and differences between them.
• Prepare two questions with four alternative answers and mark the correct answer. Your questions will be used in a Kahoot after watching all the travel shows. Include the answers to the questions in your show.

Remember this
Remember to make the presentation and comparison fun and interesting to watch. Use props and pictures to make the show more interesting. Use your fantasy for this part! Everyone in the group has to speak!

Practicallities
Group size: 2-3 people
Time: 4 lessons of preparation (w.37-39+ 1 lesson w.41) and 1-2 lessons of watching the shows (w.41 (w.42)).
Material: you need to gather information about your travel destinations, for this you may use your phones, tablets or computers. For filming the show you may also use phones and edit either by computer or phone.

Travel Blogs (w.38-39)

You will be writing three Travel blogs (see Uppgifter) as starters of the lessons. You will get about 10 minutes to write each blog. Instructions you will find in the task (see Uppgifter: Travel blog 1, Travel blog 2, Travel blog 3). You will also revise Travel Blog 3 (w.42-43 on HEL and lessons).

Kahoot (w.43 or w.45)

In your Travel Show Group, you will prepare 2 questions with four alternative answers (and mark the correct answer). The questions will be used in a Kahoot, which you will play Friday w.42.

Grading

This project will be graded on both group level and individually. It will grade your speaking and your writing skills as well as your knowledge about facts and skills to compare "your" two countries.

• Revising of Travel blog 3

Realia

• The facts of the two countries you write and talk about
• The comparisons you make between the two countries (similarities and differences).

Uppgifter

Speaking; Travel Show

You are in groups going to make (prepare, film and edit) a travel show. In this travel show you have to portrait 2 different countries in 2 different continents in which English is the main spoken or official language. The 2 countries have to be situated in two different continents of the world (Asia, South America/Caribbean, Europe, Africa, Oceania). Your show will be shown to the class so that everyone learns more about the different English speaking countries.

• Characteristic things for the country (i.e. the British people always talks about the weather).

• A comparison between the two countries your group has chosen, showing pros and cons for visiting the different countries and differences between them.

• Prepare two Kahoot questions with four alternatives to choose from and the correct answer marked. Make sure the questions are based on your show. Hand in to your teacher.

Travel blog 1

The weather is fantastic when you wake up from a long night’s sleep. You are ready to seize the day. Describe your first day on your destination. What do you do? What do you experience? What are your expectations on this trip? Describe what you think and what you see. What is different from your usual life at home?

Travel blog 2

Today something unexpected happened. What? Describe and explain the situation and how you solved it.

Travel blog 3

Today you have reached your second destination. What differences have you observed and learned about. Compare your two destinations, what similarities can you find? What differences? What are you going to do at this destination and why?

Writing; News article

You are, individually, going to write an article. You will only have one lesson to write.

Imagine you have visited one of the countries your group worked with in the travel show. Now you are going to write a news article about something unexpected that happened during your visit. Use your imagination for what could have happened (film festival, weather catastrophe, car crash or anything else). Remember to use the characteristic form of an article when you write this text.

Characteristic form:

1) Ingress - kort sammanfattning (fet text). När, var, hur, vem och vad som hänt.

2) Brödtext - Utveckla din text om vad som hänt. Beskrivning av händelseförlopp, vittnesuppgifter. Kom ihåg att börja med det viktigaste och att mindre viktig information kommer mot slutet.

3) Eventuella underrubriker i brödtexten.

4) Rubrik - kom på en rubrik som lockar läsaren att läsa din text. 

5) Byline - ditt namn och datum på slutet
