In this unit you will discover what foreigners find funny and strange with Sweden and the Swedes. You will become an expert at talking about what it is like to live in Sweden, how we speak our language (parts of it at least ) and explaining how we celebrate our traditions.
Last but not least you will be one of the co-authors of the 2020 Dummies Guide to Sweden.
Skills and Knowledge requirements in focus:
We will practise those skills and more by doing the following:
Reading: We will read different types of texts, Essays, blog posts, short stories, news articles and tourist brochures about Sweden, the Swedes, Swedish Culture and our traditions.
Listening: You will upgrade your listening skills by watching and listening to video clips, 2-3 episodes from a tv-series and some texts from different sources. We will of course also listen to each other and show our understanding by taking parts in discussions.
Talking: In small groups you will discuss what is typically Swedish. Compare Swedish culture and traditions to other countries. There will also be a lot of retelling / sharing summaries of texts that you’ve read.
Writing: There will be a lot of notetaking as you will be asked to share what you read with others. Towards the end of this unit you will get to polish your writing skills even further by contributing with a chapter each to a Guide about Sweden that we will put together for all of you to use in the future!
Culture: During our work with this unit focus will be on comparing Sweden and Swedish traditions to other countries which will give you many chances to show how good you are at doing that!
