In this project your assignment is to write a factual text and then present it to class. There are four categories for you to choose between:

  • Animals
  • Artists
  • Superheroes
  • Supervillains

Interestingly, none of these exist yet. The facts that you are going to write need to be invented first. That is your job to start with.

So what is typical of a factual text? Only facts. No opinions. We read factual texts to learn something. Here’s an example of the difference between a factual text and a fairytale.

Factual text

Fairytale

The brown bear (Ursus arctos) is a large bear species found across Eurasia and North America.

The brown bear is one of the most omnivorous animals in the world and has been recorded as consuming the greatest variety of foods of any bear. Source

Once there was a big brown bear.

It lived in a big country.

When the big brown bear was hungry he could eat almost anything.

What a silly bear.

You will work in pairs.

Come up with ideas together and collaborate as much as you need. Share a document and fill it with ideas.

The text

Then write your factual text in the Classroom assignment. You should be able to amass about 500-800 words between the two of you.

Here are some of the headlines that you need to include if you choose to write about …

an animal

an artist or a band

a superhero or supervillain

  • Description
  • Location
  • Diet
  • Discovery
  • Members (if a band)
  • History
  • Musical style
  • Greatest hits
  • Origin
  • Suit
  • Superpowers
  • Archenemy
  • Alter ego

Google animals, artists or bands and superheroes or supervillains to find inspiration. Try to use a layout similar to an encyclopedia. It should look something like this:

An animal

What is looks like

Words, words, words. More words, words, words. Even more words, words, words. Are there more words, words, words? There sure are more words, words, words! And so on and so forth.

Where is can be found

Words, words, words. More words, words, words. Even more words, words, words. Are there more words, words, words? There sure are more words, words, words! And so on and so forth.

What it eats

Words, words, words. More words, words, words. Even more words, words, words. Are there more words, words, words? There sure are more words, words, words! And so on and so forth.

How it was discovered

Words, words, words. More words, words, words. Even more words, words, words. Are there more words, words, words? There sure are more words, words, words! And so on and so forth.

Something else

Words, words, words. More words, words, words. Even more words, words, words. Are there more words, words, words? There sure are more words, words, words! And so on and so forth.

Feel free to include a picture. But if you do, it has to have been created by you.

The presentation

Here are some ideas on how you could present your work to class.

an animal

an artist or a band

a superhero or supervillain

One of you talks about the animal. The other talks about how it was discovered.

One of you is the artist. The other interviews him or her.

Both of you are members of the same band. You share stories of the good old days.

You have a debate on who would win in a fight between the superhero and the supervillain. You could also team up with another pair.

Aim to make your presentation around 5 minutes long. Make sure so that both of you share an equal amount of speaking time.

Feel free to use costumes and props.

"Encyclopedia of animals, artists, super heroes & villains" is about practicing and improving your English writing and speaking by aiming to be

  • accurate (korrekt)
  • fluent (ha flyt) and
  • coherent (vara sammanhängande)

along with
