Homemade water clock experiment

This fasicinating method teaches the children how the air pressure acts on the surface of water in a container and helps to make a rough measurement of the passage of time.

Content:

these items are used for the experiment 

1. Two empty one liter plastic water bottles 

2. A tube of glue to paste the opening of the bottles 

3. a couple of rubber washers with two tiny holes in them.

Nowadays the children are fully accustomed to the digital way of life and will be quite amazed to construct and watch this ancient method of determining the time.

Exploration and Demonstration:

Keep one bottle standing upright on a flat surface like a table. Fill this bottle roughly half with water.Then paste a rubber washer with some glue on the top opening of the bottle. Apply some glue on top of this rubber washer carefully so as not to cover the hole on it.

Invert and paste the second empty bottle onto the first bottle. Once when you quit sure bottles are permanently glued together turn the bottle containing the water upside down so that the water will start dripping through the rubber washers into the empty bottle. You could use a timer and a blister marker pen to make markings for example every 5 minutes
