Text Typer/Text Types

Do you know how to write an introduction letter for PRAO or make an invitation for your birthday party? This unit covers different types of texts that you will encounter throughout your personal and academic life. Vet du hur man skriver ett introduktionsbrev till PRAO eller gör en inbjudan till din ditt födelsedagskalas? Detta arbetsområde täcker olika typer av texter som du kommer att möta under ditt personliga och akademiska liv.

We will practice writing different types of text using the book Skrivarskolan. Each student will have the opportunity to work with at least 3 different text types of their choosing. At the end of the unit, we will put the texts together to create a class newspaper.

End of Year Project - Part 3: Presentation

“Teach us something important about mental health — and connect it to the unit.”

End of Year Project - Part 1: Persuasive Text

“Convince your audience to take mental health seriously.”

Task

Write a persuasive text (argumenterande text) where you argue why one area of mental health is especially important for teenagers today.

Choose ONE of the three focus areas from the unit:

2. Sleep & Dreams
3. Social & Cultural Factors (belonging, discrimination, identity)

Your goal is to convince other teenagers that this topic matters — and that they should take action.

Health & Mental Health Awareness Reflection - 1

This week, we began a new theme on health and mental health awareness — a topic the class was excited to explore. We did several activities to help us get into the mindset of the unit and start thinking about what mental health means in our everyday lives.

Assignment:

Write a short reflection paragraph on the topic:

“What does mental health mean to me?” You may write it directly in unikum.

Focus on your own thoughts, feelings, and understanding. There’s no right or wrong answer — this is your personal reflection.

Writing Narrative Texts - Part 2

In this assignment, you will write two narrative texts: one fiction and one nonfiction.

Step 1: Choose Your Second Text

Start with either your fiction or nonfiction narrative.

Step 2: Plan Your Text

Use the outline worksheet handed out in class to plan and organize your writing. This will help you structure your ideas clearly before you start writing.

Step 3: Write Your Text

Write your narrative in a Google document.

Share the document with me and attach it to the assignment in Unikum.

Use 12-point Arial font.

Make sure your text has title.

Write in your own voice and style.

Check your spelling, punctuation, and details for accuracy.

Persuasive Text Assessment

Complete a writing assessment on persuasive text. Choose one of the following statements and write a persuasive text arguing your position:

1. Should school start later in the morning
2. Is it better to have year‑round school or a long summer break

4. Should kids get paid for good grades
5. Is it better to be good at math or good at reading

Your grade will be based on how well you use the correct persuasive text format, content and techniques we have learned in class.

Persuasive Writing - Unit Wrap-Up

We are wrapping up our unit on writing persuasive texts. You have had many opportunities to write different types of persuasive texts aimed at different audiences.

Assignment

Review how to write a persuasive text. Use your previous assignments in your workbook as a reference. Key features to remember:

2. Three supporting reasons, each with detail or explanation
3. A conclusion that wraps up your ideas

We watched a news clip about the social media ban for children under 16 in Australia and had a discussion about what impact this could have on children in Sweden if such a ban was also implemented here.

Fact and Opinion 2

We will continue working with fact and opinion texts. In class, we talked about the importance of knowing your audience when you write. Who you are writing to affects your language, tone, and style. For example, the way you write to a friend is different from how you write to a teacher, a principal, or a company.

We also practiced coming up with strong and convincing reasons to support our opinions. When you want to persuade someone, it is important to give clear arguments and explain your thinking.

Assignment:

Complete “Writing for a Reader - Section III.” If you were absent, you should also complete Sections I and II that we worked on in class.

Instructions

1. Read both situations (A and B).
2. For each situation, come up with three strong reasons to support your decision.
3. Choose one of the situations to write about.
4. Write your text in the “Final Note” area.

When writing your final note, remember to:

• Think about who your audience is.
• Use appropriate language and tone.
• Include three clear and convincing reasons.
• Start and end your note in a suitable way (greeting and closing).
• Write in full sentences and check your spelling and punctuation.

Make sure your text clearly shows the difference between facts and opinions and that your arguments are easy to understand.

We continue working with different text types. Our focus is on narrative texts. We have talked about different types of fiction and nonfiction texts.

Assignment:

1. Complete the attached worksheet if you were absent (we did this in class).
2. Brainstorm: You will be writing two short narrative texts—one fiction and one nonfiction. Use the worksheet to help you decide what type of each you are interested in writing. For example, you might write a fantasy story and a memoir. Please come prepared with your ideas, as you will be working on your texts in class.

Interview - Family Winter Traditions

Assignment:

Interview an adult member of your family (or a family friend) who represents the English-speaking side of your family. This can be a parent, grandparent, aunt, uncle, or similar. We will also compare these traditions with those celebrated in Sweden. Next week, we will work together in class on writing a report based on the answers from the interview.

Hidden Figures - Week 4+5

This week, we finished watching the film Hidden Figures to encourage dialogue about important social issues. The goal of this unit is for students to write a fact-based text that connects to the themes explored in the film.

Assignment:

Finish the film if you have not already done so. The film is available on Disney+. Review the guiding questions. Read through the Questions to Guide Viewing and Thinking section and jot down notes or thoughts about what you have watched so far.

Did you find something about the film particulary interesting and you want to learn more about? Now it's time to write your fact-based text! Use the handout you received in class at the beginning of the unit as a guideline. You will have time to work on your text in class next week, but come with as much of your first draft done as possible so you can receive feedback. The final text is due 17 December, but I will accept what you have on the 10th and that will also be counted towards your grade this term.

Hidden Figures - Week 3

This week, we continued watching the film Hidden Figures to foster dialogue about important social issues. The goal of this unit is for students to write a fact-based text that connects to the themes explored in the film.

Assignment:

Watch the film between marks 1:04 and 1:49. The film is available on Disney+. Review the guiding questions. Read through the “Questions to Guide Viewing and Thinking” section and jot down notes or thoughts about what you have watched so far.

Start exploring topics. As you watch, think about which themes or issues interest you most. Review and start researching the suggested topics for the fact-based text you will write later in this unit.

We will finish the film in class next week and you will have time to start working on your text. I will provide additional information about the real women who inspired this film. Bring your computers so you can do research!

La Luna - Short Text

This week, we are putting together what we’ve learned so far. We watched the short Pixar film La Luna (you are welcome to rewatch it when you do your assignment; it is available on Disney+ if you have access).

Presentation of Landmark

What a great job everyone has done on their landmark paragraph! We will continue working with the same text and use it to work on giving a presentation for the class. Next week we will practice giving a presentation.

Read the text that you wrote and be familiar with it so that you will feel comfortable presenting the information to the class.

Writing a Crime Report

This week, you all stepped into the shoes of detectives and teamed up to crack a case. You gathered evidence and checked in with the forensic lab results. Plus, you took notes and chatted with your fellow sleuths. In you groups, you decided on who you think is guilty of the crime, their motive and opportunity based on the evidence collected.

Writing a Paragraph

We have been practing how to build and write complete sentences. The next step is to practice writing a paragraph.

We discussed what a paragraph is and how it can be constructed with the help of the hamburger analogy.

Assignment:

With the help of the hamburger structure, write a descriptive paragraph about the character you received in class. Remember to stay on topic and use at least 5 of the adjectives from the list in your text. Your paragraph should be 5 sentences. Attached here is you were absent.

1. Use the table on the worksheet handed out in class to describe your artwork for your presentation.
2. Don't forget to use at least 10 art terms from the list (or others) in your writing.

Persuasive Text & Presentation

We have started on our final unit of the term: Persuasive text. You received a packet in class. Please bring it with you to class. We talked about what a persuasive text is and what should be included, and even practiced outlining a sample text. You will be writing a persuasive text and presenting it (åk 9 only).

V 21 - Assignment:

1. Work on the final version of your text. Due v22.
2. Åk 9 also work on your presentation. Due v22.

No late work can be accepted. Grades will be turned in at the end of v 22.

V 20 - Assignment:

1. Use the outline worksheet in your packet to structure your text. You should have 3 arguments and 3 counterarguments.
2. Write a fluid text from the outline. This will be the first draft/utkast. Share it with me and name it "Firstname.Persuasive Text". You will get feedback next week before you work on the final version.

V 19 - Assignment:

1. Finish outlining the text we started in class.
2. Think about the arguments/opinions you have about the subject you chose in class. If you were absent, choose a topic or opinion that interest you. For example: I think students should wear school uniforms.

Text Type: The Invitation

Class activity:

This week, we worked on creating an invitation based on last week's homework, which was in preparation of this activity.

Assignment:

Finish your invitation at home, including decorations that match the theme of your event. Use the checklist to make sure you have all the important information included.

Next week, we will practice addressing an envelope for your invitation, and we will start the next text type: Instructions.

Text type: The Invitation

According to the curriculum, students should work with different types of text. Our long-term goal is to produce a class newspaper exhibiting all the different text types we covered during the term. We are going to start with the invitation in this unit.

Class activity:

• We talked about what an invitation is, the different part of an invitation and why they are important.
• We practiced writing an invitation together in class.

Assignment:

You will design your own invitation next week in class, but in preparation, you will need to fill out the worksheet handed out in class (Preparing and Invitation - attached).

Text Type: Comic Strip

v 12 Talked about what needs to be included in the comic (talk bubbles, symbols, exaggerations, convey feelings, rely heavily on illustration instead of text). Started organizing the comic using boxes and drawing the story.

v 11 Short presentation of comic strips - what should be included and some examples (see below).

Assignment:

v 12 Keep working on your comic at home. You will have time to work on in class, too. It should be finished by the end of class v 13.

v 11 Before we start drawing, we need to plan our story. Start thinking about what you want your comic to be about. Use the planner to help you. You do not need to use everything, they are just suggestions. A comic does not need to be funny, but it should convey a message. We will limit the length to one A4 paper.

Instruction Text - Disappearing Teacher Spell

This week we took a little pause from our parts of speech workbooks and are practicing writing an instructional text. We set up a potion shop in the classroom and each student received some money to shop with. This was also good practice with math and practical knowledge of using money. Each student has bought their ingredients and has listed them on their potion/spell worksheet.

Assignment:

Finish writing your spell to make a teacher disappear!

Make sure to:

• List the amount of each ingredient (remember you are welcome to include additional ingredients you did not buy in the shop)
• Number the steps in your method
• List the equipment you will need (scissors, bowl, spoon, etc.)
• Draw your potion in the cauldron on the second page.

Text Type 1

Last week, you chose the first of 3 text types to work with. Everyone had a good head start in class. Make sure you included the important information (the blue squares) in the examples in your text.

You had time to work on this text in class on Monday, and the text was due by the end of class.

This week you should have finished your text and will do a peer review of another student's text.

1. You and your partner should have shared your documents with each other.
2. You received instructions on how to do a peer review and a paper to document your comments.
3. You also received a copy of information about the text type so you know what should be included in the text.

Assignment:

Complete a peer review for your partner according to the 3 points above.

Text Type 3

Make sure that all of your text types are completed by v15.

You should be finished or nearly finished with your second text type and have started working on text type 3. Make sure you include the important information (the blue squares) in the examples in your text.

You will have time in class to work on your text.

Newspaper

You should be finished with your texts. For your homework, start thinking about how you as a class want to create your newspaper from the texts you all created. What will the newspaper be called? What kind of sections will be in the paper (news, sports, entertainment, etc.) You will need to add pictures and ads. We started organizing some of the sections in class. Please come prepared to participate!
