Wings 7: Life in Britain

For the next few weeks, we will be basing our lessons around the theme of the UK. We will be reading about, discussing, and writing about countries within the UK; the weather; accents (including how to pronounce ‘bottle of water’); regional stereotypes; why everyone hates the English; slang; politeness; why the Americans can’t understand the British; the monarchy and republicanism; London; and schooling in Britain. If we have time, we will also try to cover some famous Britons and British traditions.

Grammar:

We will continue to work on auxiliary verbs and the present tense.

Reading:

Our reading will include the following pages from the textbook: Four Countries – One Kingdom (pp 132-133); A Summer Tour Around England (pp. 134-135); Discover Scotland (pp. 136-137); Pack for Wales (pp- 138-139); Unlock the Secrets of Northern Ireland (pp. 140-141); and Who Lives in the UK (pp.142-143).

We will also be reading about Prince Phillip’s gaffs, politeness, Cockney rhyming slang, and other subjects that come up in our discussions.

 

Listening:

We will listen to some recordings from the Wings textbook and we will watch several clips about different accents and stereotypes in the UK. We will also watch highlights of a very uncomfortable interview of Prince Andrew, an analysis of how Queen Elizabeth II was a ‘badass’, an explanation of the differences between US and UK English and find out about the strictest school in England.

 

Talking:

We will be discussing our observations and opinions, and we will also practice using various types of slang and thinking about when it is and is not OK to use slang.

 

Writing:

We will have several writing exercises including, arguments for and against the monarchy, why school uniform is/is not a good idea and fact finds on the countries of the UK.

 

Assessment:

As well as ongoing assessment and feedback there will be a test at the end of the module. This test will include reading and listening skills, some vocabulary, some grammar and a short-written text.

Tourist stuff, Hidden Gems and Entertainment

While we are doing the speaking tests you will work with your partner to develop a 5 minute presentation on London. You will imagine that you have been given lots of money to spend a weekend in the capital city of England.

Do the following:

• Plan a trip to 5 Tourist attractions (art galleries, museums, landmarks, whatever floats your boat). Have three facts ready for each.

• Plan a visit to somewhere a bit different, maybe a bit weird, quirky or interesting. Something random. Have three facts ready for this place.

• Plan an activity (maybe a show, a spa visit, shopping, a football match). Where are you going? Why?

• Pick a nice hotel and find some places to eat the lunch and dinner of your choice.

Put this into a nice colourful PowerPoint presentation. Remember to include your facts about the places you will visit and the things you want to do.

You will have loads of money. You are with your friend. Use your imagination and do something fun.

The research that you do for this presentation, and the information that you collect is going to be useful for your final written assignment. Use your time well!
