This classic short story by Roald Dahl invites you to read carefully and between the lines. If you do, put together the clues, a mystery is solved. In other words, you analyse a story like a police officer investigates a crime scene.

Expected Outcome

* You understand what probably happened to Billy Weaver, the main character of the story. You back up your conclusion using examples and clues from the text.

* You write a short story of your own with a beginning, middle and end and a conflict and with the characteristics of the genre (see instruction)

* Lectures and videos explaining concepts, giving instructions about how to read between the lines and about how to put together a short story.

* Taking notes while reading, writing down examples and clues.

How to write a short story

What is a short story?

It´s a piece of fiction, a made up story with a limited length and scope.

It normally has a simple plot, with a build-up of tension to a conflict. The conflict marks the peak of the story and then the conflict is resolved, in some way. So the plot is like a fever-curve where the conflict is the climax, the highest temperature.

A short story only has a couple of characters, it also contains descripitions of environments, places, time, weather and characters.

The description of the outward scene (environment, weather etc) is designed to create an intended atmosphere. It´s called setting.

The description of a character is a way of giving information about the personality and appearance of him/her.

Another way of having information about a character´s intentions, state of mind or personality is to see what they do. It´s called literary composition.

How do you put together a short story?

• Know your character. Who is he/she?

• Figure out a plot. What will be the conflict of your story? How do you build up tension? How do you resolve the conflict?

• What´s your setting?

• Where will you have descriptions, of characters and setting?

• How can you begin your story, in an interesting way, vaguely introducing the conflict?

• Do you plan on using any dialogue? If so, do it sparsely. Too much dialogue often makes a dull story.

• What´s a suitable title?

• When you´ve written your short story, it can be rewarding letting classmates read it before giving you feedback.

The length of your story should be between 1 – 2 pages, written in 12-point size letters, in Word.
