Window on Britain

Content of the work

We’ll take a deep dive into the differences and similarities between what it is like to live in Sweden vs Britain. These are the areas we will study:

homes and housing                      (week 15)

geography                                     (week 16)

final: 4 groups+ posters                (week 17-18)

 
How will we do this? 

We will use a documentary program which is called "Window on Britain". Each week we will take a look at one episode from this documentary.
You will take notes while watching / listening.
I will also give you the links to the programs, in case you want / need to rewatch some of the episodes. 

You will also do some very hands-on tasks such as:

·       creating your own English schedule - using the information you have about the English school days

·       creating your own grocery store and a hotel-restaurant breakfast-buffet menu, using the information you have about British food culture

·       making a map of your own make-believe suburb - using the information you have about British housing and British homes

·       working with a map of the entire Britain - marking the main ports, cities and other areas of interest

Why - what skills are we working with? 

Listening and reading comprehension: you will get to deepen your abilities to take notes, tease out the the important stuff from the not-so-important fluff, look up new words, find expressions which you need in order to discuss the different areas we are studying and the like. 

Written English: you will write an essay in which you discuss the similarities and differences of everyday life between Sweden / Britain. This will further enlarge your vocabulary as well as sharpen your argumentative skills. You should use your notes and new vocabulary from earlier lessons in the essay.

Spoken English: during these weeks you will have a discussion on given topics in small groups. The discussion topics will not be known before hand, but they will all belong within the given theme. This gives you the chance to practise spoken English in small, informal groups / situations, as well as your ability to show consideration towards the other people in your group and everyone getting an equal chance to speak and express their opinion about a given topic.

Week 17-18: Housing and living

Now we will take a look at how people live i Britain. We will also learn names of furniture. What different types of living are there? Is it similair to Sweden? 1. Watch the episode on Youtube: Houses people live in in the UK. 2. Write down from the film : - What is the most common way to live in the UK? - What are the words for the different housing etc? 3. Learn new words you don't know, from the film. 4. Write down: - How do people live in Sweden? - What is the most common way to live in Sweden? - How do you live? - How would you like to live in the future, and why? 4. Do you know the names of different furniture? Work with words "In the house" in the document or on the copy you get from me. Learn as many as you can. Think of how you best learn new words when you work (glosor.eu, ordkort, bilder...?). 5. Prepare to write a short text where you compare Sweden and Britain, using what you have learnt during this period.

week 12: schools

A) Listen and watch the "school" - episode of Window on Britain, twice. Take notes while watching and listening. Try to cover these things in your notes: - What are the different school-forms called? - What is a British school-day like? - The names of some of the subjects mentioned - What is the difference between a state school and an independent school? B) After having watched today's episode, write down some differences and similarities between your schoolday and the British student's schooldays Finished? Good! C) Now start on your English schedule! Start by looking up the names of all the different subjects: what is "idrott” in English? What about "hem- och konsumentkunskap"? Use your own timetable for help! How many different subjects are there? What are they called in English? Now decide what your days should look like: - what subject should be first on Monday morning? - what subject suits perfectly after lunch? - do you study on Saturdays as well? - at what time does your days end? Do they all end at the same hour? What hour is that? - do you need to plan in brakes? How long should they be? - what about after-school activities? Should you plan in them as well? There's a lot to think about when making the perfect schedule! Be sure not to miss any of the subjects! Finished? Good! week 15-16: food

British food culture: Here are my suggestions for note-taking questions: - What do the Brits eat for breakfast/lunch/dinner? - When do the Brits eat, normally? What time of the day? - What is convenience food? - What is a traditional English breakfast? - Why do you suppose fish and chips has become a traditional fast-food in Britain? Why not hamburgers or perhaps chicken? Why fish? When you have finished watching / taking notes on this week's video you'll get to start on your own hotel breafast-menu: What should be served? Do you serve both a continental and an English breakfast? Do you know what all of the different dishes are called in English? ________ Now, watch the film about groceries and shopping. Make a list of useful phrases. What does your grocery store look like? Make a map and list some of the items from each aisle!
