Food

During this project, we read about food in a few English-speaking countries, especially school dinners (lunch i bamba) and finish by a written production or a recorded debate, in which you compare (jämför) the things you’ve read with your own thoughts on food in Sweden.

Why do we do this?

When you read about how school meals work and what people eat in other countries, you learn about English-speaking countries and their way of life. By writing or debating about it, you practice written production or speaking as well as comparing your own experiences with areas where English is a main language.

What and how we are going to do?

You are going to read different texts about food and school meals (school dinners) in a few English-speaking countries. Remember to look up words that are difficult, but not every word, only the ones that make it difficult to understand the meaning of the text. You'll find the texts here. 

You can use oribi if you want to listen to the text, choose one of the English voices.

 

After reading, you are going to write or debate about what you have learnt and make a comparison (jämförelse) between what you are used to and what we eat here in Sweden and different countries around the world.

 

If you choose to write a text, choose three English-speaking countries to write about. The entire text is supposed to be 300-400 Words long.Try to include an introduction (inledning): two or three lines telling the reader what they are going to read -  and a conclusion (slutsats): three to five lines summing up (sammanfattar) your thoughts and what you have written in the text. An introduction can look like this: “In this text, I’m going to write about school lunches in the U.S. and India, and compare that with the food we eat in Sweden.”, and a conclusion could be: “So, in Sweden we don’t pay for the food we eat in school, but in the U.S. many people do pay. Since, I don’t like the food we eat in the cafeteria (bamba), I’m glad we don’t pay for it.” or look like this: “In conclusion/to sum up, in Sweden we don’t pay for the food we eat in school, but in the U.S. many people do pay. I think it’s very good that all Swedish children can have a meal in the middle of the day without paying.”

If you choose to record a debate, you will be in a group with four classmates. Two are going to be against the Swedish way and two are going to debate it's the best. Your recording is supposed to be about 10-15 minutes.

 Answer questions like:

• How do school dinners work in the English-speaking countries you’ve chosen and how does it work in Sweden? Is it better or worse in Sweden or in the other countries? What is good and what is bad?

• What do Brits eat for breakfast? What do you eat for breakfast? What do you see as a typically Swedish breakfast? Is it similar or different to a full English breakfast, why or why not?

• If you come up with a question of your own on this subject, you can choose to write about that too (however you should answer at least one of the questions above).

• Remember to give examples and explain why things are the way they are, or at least why you think they are that way.
