"The Murders in the Rue Morgue" was first published in 1841 and has been considered the first modern detective story. The character of Dupin became the prototype for many future fictional detectives, including Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes and Agatha Christie's Hercule Poirot.

We will be listening to a story in 6 parts by Edgar Allan Poe, "The Murders in the Rue Morgue". Any required reading material will be distributed for the students through the learning log.

Uppgifter

Pt. 2 - Taking Notes

Your first assignment will be a listening comprehension assignment. You will listen to an account of the state of crime scene and the eyewitness testimonies. Your task is to take notes while listening. You should try to pick up on as much information and detail as possible. You don't have to write complete sentences while listening - you will get some time to do that after listening. The important part is that you can use your notes to reconstruct the information you've received. 1. Take notes while listening 2. Take 5-10 minutes to rewrite your notes so that any reader can understand what you've jotted down. 3. Turn in your notes in Unikum When everyone has turned in their notes, we will discuss the state of the crime scene and the witness testimonies in class. It's important that you don't talk to your classmates about the story until everyone has turned in their notes.

Pt. 3 Alternative Ending

Your assignment for part 3 is to write your own alternative ending to the story. What do you think happened? 1. Listen to the third part of the story in class. 2. Compare what you previously knew about the crime with the new information presented. Revise your theory! 3. Write your own ending to the story. When writing, there are a few things you need to keep in mind: The story is fictional and YOU will decide how it ends. Use your notes from part 2 and the new information you received in part 3 to construct your ending. However, since you are only writing the ending, you also need to think about how to make the ending fit with the beginning of the story. Think about the characters in the story, how would they behave? How would they speak? Your story should contain at least proper 1 dialogue. We will briefly discuss how you can write believable dialogues in class. Do they catch the criminal or not? If so, how? If not, why not? The story should be written in Times New Roman 12p with 1,5 spacing. You will be asked to participate in peer review of a classmate's story when we listen to part 4 of the story.

Storytelling

In the previous assignments you have written your version of the story. Now it is time to adapt the story to a new media. Your task is as follows (make sure that you follow the instruction step by step!) : Step 1 Choose pictures that reinforces the narrative and genre of your story. You are only allowed to use pictures from the links attached or pictures you have created yourself. Step 2 Divide your story into smaller parts, so that one part can be connected to one or a couple of the pictures you have chosen. Step 3 Create a Power Point in which you use your pictures. Also, add the story in the tool "speaking notes". Step 4 Rehearse reading your story aloud, at least three times. Pay attention to voice, tone, pronunciation and pace. Step 5 Record your reading of the story in your Power Point, preferably in not so long sections. Step 6 Add features such as animations etc. Step 7 Have a look at your presentation to make sure that you are satisfied with the result. Step 8 Hand in your presentation in Unikum (Deadline 9/11)
