The medieval Church came under increasing pressure during the later medieval period and into the early modern period. Cultural, political, and theological differences beween the Eastern and Western Church led to the Great Schism. Following this, in the late Renaissance and early modern period, calls for reform of Church practice and eventually theology led to the theological and political revolution that was the Reformation. These two ruptures in the previously Catholic (the universal) Church created fault lines that still define Christianity.
