A Shovel with My Name on It

We will work with the short story "A Shovel with My Name on It" by Steve Hamilton.

Why?

- To develop the ability to listen, read and understand literature in English.

- To develop the ability to write texts in English.

In the classroom

1. You will read the short story "A Shovel with My Name on It". You will find the text here.

 You will also work with the text in class, as well as watch the short film The Shovel. Furthermore, we will compare the short story to the short film.

2. We will go through the text again, looking at and working with vocabulary (words) and expressions, as well as the plot (what happens in the story). Reading on, between and beyond the lines.

3. You will write one of the following texts:

a) A news article. You can find a description of how to write a news article here. Key questions to answer in your text: Who? What? Where? When? How? Why? Remember to be objective (to not write your views/opinions)!

 

b) A letter of confession. You are going to write a letter of confession.

Imagine you are the sheriff from the story. Write a letter to your deputy about what really happened that night at Hank's house. Try to come up with a credible explanation, one that fits the story.
