Forrest Gump 8BC vt2021

During 5 weeks you are going to watch the movie Forrest Gump. You will interact and discuss the movie orally, as well as in written. You will also learn about and show your knowledge about the USA.

Goals

• to develop the ability and necessary strategies to watch and listen to an English movie

• to develop the ability to orally and in writing, discuss something that you have seen and heard

• to motivate your thoughts and ideas by giving examples of facts and what happen in the movie

• to be active in the conversation and help to keep the conversation going (= improve your interaction)

• to use different strategies to solve linguistic difficulties while speaking and writing (e.g. explain a word or a phrase you don't know)

Way of working 

• You are going to watch a movie – Forrest Gump.

• You will have several occasions during class when you discuss the movie with one, or some class mates.

• You will also write about two topics from the movie - the main character, Forrest Gump, and intelligence. You will get questions to support your discussion.

• You will talk and write about the plot, the characters, the environment, different scenes, messages, historical and political events, etc.

• You will give response (stars and wishes) to one class mate's text (Examination).

• You will revise your Examination text, using the response you have received.

Shortwriting 2: What is a HERO?

You are going to write about being a HERO. In your text you need to include your own thoughts and oppinions about the following information. You need to describe and explain your thoughts. Remember to give examples from your own life, Forrest Gump (movie) and

- What is a Hero (to you)? Give examples. Compare your oppinion of what a hero is to how a hero is described in films.

- Who is a hero?

- What charachterizes a hero?

- Describe in what way Forrest Gump is or isn't a hero?

Write a flowing text. Remember to use capital letter, dots, commas and sections. Write in a word doc or in Unikum.

Examination: The life story of ...

1. Write about the life story of one of these characters:

2. You are going to write in first person = pretend that you are the character (I-form: When I was born my parents decided give me the name...).

3. Describe what "you" (the character) feel and think about different situations in life + Motivate feelings and opinions

4. Give examples of what happens in the film to support what you are writing about.

5. Find 2-3 quotes from the film that your character has said.

6. The text has to be about 1/2 - 1 page long.

7. Text genre could be; a chronicle, a letter, a diary, a lyric to a song, a poem, a short story or just a text written in 1st person.

1. Choose 2-3 of these events. Find facts and orally discuss one event at a time:

· John Lennon (member of the Beatles)

· the shrimp fishing business

2. Discuss the events you've chosen. Use these questions to help you in your discussions:

a) When did this happen/start?

b) Why did it happen/start?

c) What did the event lead to?

d) Describe what feelings and thoughts you think people had, while experiencing these events (e.g. when being in the Vietnam war or when coming home to the USA after the war).

e) Give examples from the movie to support your thoughts, feelings and opinions.

f) Compare to something you have experienced yourself, or to something that is happening or has happened in Borlänge, Sweden, Europe or in the world.

g) What do you think you would feel if this happened today?
