Reading project yr 9 w.10- 17

This is a reading project in which you will read a book of your own choice for 5 weeks. You will discuss the book through starters and a shorter text. You will also choose which kind of presentation you want to do, but to help you, you will get a number of different tips in this plan.

Way of working

You will:

• read an English novel
• divide the book into 4 parts
• read 1 part/week (1/4 of the book)
• use w.14 (easter holiday) to read if you need to
• discuss the book during lessons
• work with learning words
• get 1 starter in which you will write about the book
• work with translating text into Swedish

OBS! During week 15 and the first lesson week 16 you are going to do reading and listening tests (NP)

Examination

1. Written:  One shortwriting: Your favourite character, compare with yourself or Messages and your own opinion, support your                         ideas with examples from the book

                   Translation: Translate a paragraph/ scene into Swedish trying to capture the mood/ atmosphere of the text.

 

2. Your own choice of presentation. (week 17)

Choose from these suggestions:

1.    An analyzes: a) Introduction b) Main characters c) Environments in the book d) Link to the era or genre e) Message

     f) Summary of the plot g) Own discussion about the book (opinions, thoughts)

2.   Act like one of the characters in the book - tell about yourself and your role in the story (Oral presentation or in writing).

3.   Do an interview with one of the characters in the book.(Oral presentation or in writing)

4.   Rewrite a scene from the book into a play script.   

5.   Write a manuscript and act a scene from the book.  

6.  Make a description of one of the characters. (Oral presentation or in writing)

7.    Make a timeline of the events in the book. (Oral presentation or in writing)

8.  Act like the author - tell the story behind the book you have written. (Oral presentation or in writing)

9.  Interview the author. (Oral presentation or in writing)

10.  Make a book cover - draw a picture of an important event in the book and write a summary of the story.

11.  Write a sequel to the book (book nr.2).

12.  Write the next chapter in the book.

13.  Write about the ending of the book.

14.  Design an ad so that you get the urge to read the book.

15.  Write a letter to a person in the book.

16.  Write a letter from one of the people in the book to someone else.

17.  Write a letter to the author.

18.  Compare the book with the movie. (Oral presentation or in writing)

19.  Compare the book with another book. (Oral presentation or in writing)

20.  Write a newspaper article covering an event or a situation in the book.

21.  Write an obituary (minnesruna) of a person in the book.

22.  Write a tribute speech to a person in the book. (Oral presentation or in writing OR both!)

23.  Make a commercial for TV or radio to sell the book - (Oral presentation or filmed version)

24.  Draw or paint a picture from the book and then tell the class about events and people in your picture.

25.  Make a list of questions that you ask the class about how they would react to events or situations that the people in the book are faced with.

26.  Choose an event from the book and rewrite it the way you want it.

27.  Write a song that you can rap or sing.

28.  Write a poem about the message or a situation in the book.

29.  Make a video about the message or a situation in the book.

30.  Make a board game based on the story.

31.  Make an on-site live newscast.

32.  Write an epilogue.

33.  Write a prologue.

34.  Write a book review for the culture page in a magazine.

Syfte

• förstå och tolka innehållet i talad engelska och i olika slags texter,
• formulera sig och kommunicera i tal och skrift,

Describe a character

Describe one of the main characters. Use the table (See Describing a character).

Describe your favourite scene

• Describe the scene: What happens? Which characters are involved? In which setting is this happening?
• Why do you like this scene? Give some examples from the book to support your thoughts.

Short Writing: The messages and own opinions

The messages:

• What are the messages of the book?
• If you must put every message together in one single word, what would they be?
• What do you think about the messages?
• Have you experienced something like that?
• Also give examples from the book to “prove” the message (things that happen in the book that shows the message/s).

Own opinions:

• What's your overall opinion of the book?
• Was the language easy or difficult? Is it easy to follow?
• Does the title of the book fit the story?
• Did your first impression of the book change? Why?
• How are you as a reader affected by the way the book is written?
• What did you like? What did you not like?
• Was the ending as you had expected it to be? Would you like to change the ending?
• To whom would you recommend the book?
• Did you get any questions after reading the book? 

Remember to describe and explain why you think as you do! 

Give examples or quotes from the book to support your thoughts and opinions.
