Reading Strategies

Why do teachers go on about reading? Why is reading so important? Why do we need to understand when we read? Strategies for improving your understanding when you read.

6 lessons, including a final written task.

The five reading strategies:

1. asking questions
2. predicting
3. picturing - create an inner image
4. clarifying
5. summarising

In this module we are going to look at and practice 5 different strategies to help you understand more when you read.

Lesson 1

Introduction

Discussions in small groups:

• Why do teachers go on about reading?
• Why is reading so important?
• Why do we need to understand when we read?

Strategy 1 - Asking questions

• Repetition of the strategy and individual task for pupils to complete and submit.
• Task 1 (Se uppgift 1)

Lesson 2

Strategy 2 - Predicting

• Repetition of the strategy and some examples. Individual task to complete and submit.

Lesson 3

Strategy 3 - Picturing

• Repetition of the strategy, example of a storyboard. Text for pupils to read.

Lesson 4

Strategy 4 - Clarifying

• Repetition and explanation of the strategy.
• Examples of the different suggested methods
• Individual task to complete and submit
• Task 4

Lesson 5

Strategy 5 - Summarising

• Repetition of the strategy and some examples. Individual task for to complete and submit.
• Task 5

Lesson 6 - Final individual task.

• Written in English, in Digiexam, during ONE lessopn.

Reading Strategies, task 3 - picturing

The task can be found here.

• Remind yourself of the strategy and the four questions you need to answer.
• Read through the text.
• In your English folder on Google Drive, create a new google document.
• Name it "yourname&class reading3".
• Copy the four questions (at the bottom of the document) into your own google document.
• Using the text up to and including line 142 (but NOT further), answer the four questions and then hand in the document.
• Deadline - 1 week after the task was set.

• Remind yourself of the strategy and the four questions you need to answer.
• Read through the text.
• In your English folder on Google Drive, create a new google document.
• Name it "yourname&class reading2".
• Copy the four questions (at the bottom of the document) into your own google document.
• Using the text up to and including line 142 (but NOT further), answer the four questions and then hand in the document.
• Deadline - 1 week after the task was set.

• Remind yourself of the strategy and the three questions you ask yourself.
• Read through the text.
• In your English folder on Google Drive, create a new google document.
• Name it "yourname&class reading1".
• Copy the three questions (at the bottom of the document) into your own google document.
• Using the whole text, answer the three questions and then hand in the document.

Deadline - 1 week after the task was set.

Reading Strategies, task 5 - summarising

The task can be found here.

• Remind yourself of the strategy and the four questions you need to answer.
• Read through the text.
• In your English folder on Google Drive, create a new google document.
• Name it "yourname&class reading5".
• Copy the text (at the bottom of the document) into your own google document.
• Follow the instructions, highlight firstly sentences, and then after that, keywords in each of those sentences.
• Deadline - 1 week after the task was set.
