Filmen handlar om

Under den amerikanska depressionen upptäcker en omtalad cirkusdirektör en man utan armar och ben på en karneval. Mannen fungerar som huvudnummer i karnevalens freak show. Direktören, som driver The Butterfly Circus, ser möjligheter där andra ser hinder lockar mannen att följa med
