yr9 VT22 Poetry, translation and grammar

This term the students will create their own poetry society and organise a poetry competition for themselves and other Swedish schools and write a grammar book for 10 year olds. They will also evaluate the film(in .ppt) they produced after reading 'The strange case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde'. We will work with poetry writing, persuasive writing, translation, and comparison of Swedish and English, informative and explanatory writing. The main focus is on tailoring language for purpose and audience.

Film

As a follow-up to last term's reading 'The Strange case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde', the students finalise their own film version of the book.

• 1. Finalise the film
• 2. Watch and review the film - do a film critique.

The film production is delayed due to various circumstances - so they develop an interest in poetry and form the 'Kvarngärde Poetry Society' and organise their own competition.

Poetry and persuasion

• 1. write three short poems one of which is a haiku.
• 2 Write the rules for the competition and write a persuasive letter to the principal of the school. In groups, design an advert to advertise the competition.
• 3. Compile the poems into one book.
• 4. Hold the poetry competition.

Translation

Having been very successful with the poetry society, students were asked to help other schools organise their own competition. This means, they have to:-

• 1. Translate one poem from English to Swedish
• 2. Translate the rules and letter to Swedish
• 3. Translate a 'real' set of rules for a writing competition from Swedish to English.
• 4.Read a poem written in Swedish and translated to English and respond. Using the poem and their own knowledge, compare and contrast Swedish and English.

Finally, the film is ready for evaluation!

Grammar book

In groups, design and write a grammar book for 10-year-olds - covering nouns, adjectives, verbs, adverbs, determiners, prepositions, conjunctions and pronouns.

Present the booklet to the other groups.

• Eleven kan utifrån sitt modersmåls särdrag skriva olika texter med relativt tydligt innehåll och relativt god språklig variation med en i huvudsak fungerande kombination av vardagsrelaterade och ämnesrelaterade ord och begrepp.
• Texterna kännetecknas av utvecklade beskrivningar och utvecklad berättarstruktur.
• Eleven anpassar på ett utvecklat sätt sina texters innehåll och språk så att de fungerar relativt väl i de situationer som skrivandet avser.
• Genom att på ett relativt väl fungerande sätt jämföra och översätta ord, begrepp och fraser mellan modersmålet och svenska kan eleven föra utvecklade och relativt väl underbyggda resonemang om likheter och skillnader mellan modersmålet och svenska.
• Eleven kan med en ändamålsenlig kombination av vardagsrelaterat och ämnesrelaterat språk samtala om och diskutera varierande ämnen på ett utvecklat sätt.
• I sådana situationer kan eleven ställa frågor och framföra åsikter med utvecklade och underbyggda argument på ett sätt som för samtalen och diskussionerna framåt.
