English grade 9 weeks 13-17

Dr Phil meets fairytales: You are going to put a traditional fairytale into a modern context.

This project consists of two parts; a writing part and a speaking part. You will watch a Dr. Phil episode and based on that you will prepare and act out a Dr. Phil talk show.

You will be divided into groups by your teacher. You will be given a problem for Dr. Phil to solve. Then you decide who should play the different parts. After that you start writing the manuscript for the show. The manuscript does not have to be handed in.

 

Topics to choose from:

You are going to put a traditional fairytale into a modern context. You can choose between Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood or Hansel & Gretel.

 

What is Cinderella’s problem?

Her father remarried and Cinderella is bullied by her stepsisters and the stepmother. Her father is doing nothing about it since he is working all the time. Cinderella asks Dr Phil to help solve the problems in the family.

 

What is Little Red Ridinghood’s problem?

Well, Little “Red” is living with her mum who works a lot, so “Red” must help to take care of grandma who lives in a rough neighbourhood on the other side of town. On the way there she often gets in contact with drug dealers or other criminals. She barely has time for homework and school is not going well. Red asks Dr Phil to help sort out this situation.

 

 

 

What is Hansel’s & Gretel’s problem?

 

Their father remarried and the new wife hates his children from the previous marriage. Since their biological mother cleaned their father out completely in the divorce, before heading off to Spain to live in luxury, the family is struggling to make ends meet. Being poor is not something that the new wife enjoys, and she thinks that the children are a financial burden. She’s trying to figure out ways of getting rid of them. Gretel even overheard her trying to persuade her dad to leave them in the forest…

Hansel & Gretel want Dr Phil to help them to solve the situation.

 

 

 

 

Important:

·        You work together as a group which means that you are dependent on each other. If a group member does not show up on time or not at all, he or she ruins the work for the group.

·        In a group you all have the same right to decide what is going to happen, but you also need to compromise.

·        “Bad language” is kept to a minimum in the talk show.

·        You need to be efficient so that the work can be finished on time.

·        You can decide to act out your talk show live or film it with your computer (not your phones).
