The Shawshank Redemption

About the film: We are going to watch a film that is called The Shawshank Redemption. We will do different assignments connected to the film while we watch. The film is a 1994 American drama film written and directed by Frank Darabont, based on the 1982 Stephen King novella Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption. It tells the story of banker Andy Dufresne (Tim Robbins), who is sentenced to life in Shawshank State Prison for the murders of his wife and her lover, despite his claims of innocence. Over the following two decades, he befriends a fellow prisoner, contraband smuggler Ellis "Red" Redding (Morgan Freeman). This film is told to be the best film in the world, lets see what you think! About Stephen King: Stephen Edwin King (born September 21, 1947) is an American author of horror, supernatural fiction, suspense, crime, science-fiction, and fantasy novels. Described as the "King of Horror”, his books have sold more than 350 million copies, and many have been adapted into films, television series, miniseries, and comic books. King has published 64 novels, including seven under the pen name Richard Bachman, and five non-fiction books. He has also written approximately 200 short stories, most of which have been published in book collections. He is one of the most known authors in America.

Task 1 – speaking

You will get about one lesson to prepare answers to the questions below. Write down your answers - in full sentences or keywords, that’s up to you.

After that, you will have a conversation about these questions in small groups or in pairs. You will record the conversation and airdrop/send it to me. The conversation should be around 10-15 minutes long.

1.  What passages in the movie make you feel glad, angry or sad?

2. Red says: ”At first these walls scare you and then you get used to them and finally you get dependent on them”. What do you think he means by that?

3. Can you understand Brook’s feelings once he gets out of prison?  Why do you think he is so afraid all the time? Is there something you are afraid of? If so, what and why?

4. The warden is a real hypocrite. In what way?  Have you ever met a hypocrite? What happened?

5. Red tries to convince the prison board that he is a ”changed man” many times during the years. They finally believe him. Why, do you think?

You are now going to write a review of the movie.

 

1.    We will talk about the structure of a review (introduction, body, conclusion). This is how the structure of a review looks like:

Here you want to provide basic information about the movie and a sense of what your review will be about. You should include:

•Title and producer  

•Publication information: Publisher, year

•Genre

2. Body

Summarize the plot. Do not give away the ending!

The characters
Who is the main character? Are there more than one? Describe them as well as you can. What are they like? How do they act? Do they change during the movie? What are their relations to each other?

 

The setting
Where does the story take place? City - countryside, rich - poor, indoors - outdoors, school - work...?

 

The message
What is the message of the story?

 

Your opinion
What is your overall opinion of the movie? What did you like? What did you not like? To whom would you recommend this movie? Was the language easy or difficult to understand? Was the ending as you had expected it to be or would you like to change it? Does the title fit the story?

Remember that you always have to explain why you think the way you do! Try to give examples from the movie to support your opinion.

 

3.Conclusion

 

Briefly conclude by pulling your thoughts together. You may want to say what impression the story left you with or emphasize what you want your reader to know about it.

 

 

2.    Before you start working on your review – read the book review on” Lord of the flies”.

3.    What was good about the review? What could have been better? Compare to the instructions above. Write down your answers/thoughts.

4.    Group and class discussion.

5.    Start working on your own review. Don’t forget to plan your writing – for example by making a mindmap.
