EN Book Circle Youth Novels AÖW v.16-22

Reading, speaking and writing will be key elements in this last project, where we read youth novels and discuss in groups. At the end, you will write an interview article based on a character in your book.

For the next couple of weeks, we are going to read a book called “Of Mice and Men”, by John Steinbeck. You will read, listen, write, discuss, and end with writing an interview article.

For the first part of the book, p.42, you are going to write down (translate) the words you
don’t know. This will make it easier to understand the rest of the book and improve your vocabulary.

Book circle 4: + Discuss questions (handout). + Write an evaluation of the book circle; comment how the work went, your    feelings/experiences during this week.

The different roles in the book circle:
1. discussion leader Prepare 5 questions on the pages you’ve read. Set the scene and tell the page number before you write down your question. At the meeting you lead the discussion. Address your friends with their names and thank them for their presented activity. Always start by asking the summarizer to summarize today’s reading. Next is your turn, to ask the prepared questions to the group. Keep an eye on the clock!

2. summarizer Prepare a brief summary of today’s reading. Cover the key events and main highlight only. You will start the circle meeting.

3. character tracer Choose a character and list some character traits that the person has shown in today’s reading. Give the page numbers and evidence from your reading why you think he/she/they is like this.

4. creative connector Find connections between the book and the world outside. Connect the readings to your own life, things you have seen or experienced. Point out similarities and differences between the book and your own life/experience/another book, movie or music.

Assessment:
You will be assessed on your work by participation in the book circles (one will be recorded), lesson assignments, evaluation, and the interview article at the end of the project.
