 - Your First Writing Task

- I would like us to start this English course with your writing a brief text to me, where you tell me how you would like us to work with the course English 6.

- I want you to write the text on your computers, as usual using your very best English, choosing a proper heading and dividing your text into paragraphs etc. Hand your text in here, in Unikum. 

- You have already spent two years at Lindengymnasiet. If you think back about these years, what do you remember most? What has been good about your studies so far (school in general and English in particular)? What has been not so good, i e is there anything you would like to change this year?

Finally, what are your strengths and weaknesses when it comes to English (listening, reading, writing, speaking)?

Thus, I also want you to describe to me what you plan on doing to improve (i e to get better at the things that you need to work on) and what you are going to do to try and reach your goal (e g do homework and study hard) and if there's anything you would like me to do/think about to help you improve and reach your goal.

Some advice when writing reviews

A book or a film is normally composed of most of the elements listed below – but not necessarily in the following order:

A. Some basic facts – title, genre (science fiction, romance…) writer, director.

B. The setting – refers to the time and place of the action. Where and when?

- Continent, country

- Surroundings and social environment (small town, big city, among rich/poor people)

- Period in history, season, time of day…

- What athmosphere is conveyed and how? Peaceful, tense, threatening. Notice also the use of light, sounds, smells, colours, weather etc…

C. The characters. Who is it all about?

- Describe them (appearence, behaviour, character…)

- Do they change in the course of events?

- Who is the maincharacter?

D. The plot – What happens in the story (and why)?

- What are the main events?

- Is it a good plot? Does it work? What makes the plot move forward?

- What is the climax?

- What kind of ending is it?

E. Theme and message. What is the story really about? E.g. poverty, betrayal, racism. Is there something to learn from the story?

G. Conclusion. All in all, what is your personal impression about the film/book and why? What impression did it make on you?

Procrastination - we all do it and there is no denying it, but what goes on in the brain of a procrastinator? Why do some of us always seem to wait until the last day to start working on our assignments? Tim's hilarious Tedtalk about this subject provides us with food for thought.
