It's Baltimore, 1999. Hae Min Lee, a popular high-school senior, disappears after school one day. Six weeks later detectives arrest her classmate and ex-boyfriend, Adnan Syed, for her murder. He says he's innocent - though he can't exactly remember what he was doing on that January afternoon. But someone can. A classmate at Woodlawn High School says she knows where Adnan was. The trouble is, she’s nowhere to be found.

During class, we will divide the class into two Groups (bring your finished essay). You will then explain to your classmates the result of your conclusions (you may have the essay in front of you, but try to speak freely)

You are to write an essay (1-2 A4) on the topic of cultural barriers. In your text you should include the following:

* Hae and Adnan had to keep their relationship hidden from their parents. Why? (Give Hae’s reasons and Adnan’s reasons)

* What do you think had happened if their relationship was revealed?

* Do you think the situation would have ended differently if they had been able to tell their parents about their relationship?

* Do you recognize any part of Hae’s and Adnan’s family issues in your own life?

* Does your family have a saying in who you choose as a girlfriend or boyfriend or friend? Why/why not?

* How do you think it affects young people living a double life as Hae and Adnan did?

You don’t have to answer these questions in any particular order, and you may also add other relevant points. Please remember that these are questions that shall be discussed not answered - meaning there is an essay to be written.

Aim – to persuade someone, to choose a side and present arguments
