What is love? That is a gigantic question! In Wings Black, section 2, we will explore this subject.

Swedish Wedding TraditionsAim

In the classroom

You will learn:

• words that are relevant to this section,
• about falling in love (at least what the book says about it),
• about the art of flirting,
• about different types of weddings.

We will start this section off with watching a film and reflecting on some questions. Then, with Wings Black as a base, we will read, discuss and write different types of texts. We will also work with several activites having to do with the subject.

Assessment

I will assess:

• your ability to speak in the classroom and in small groups.
• your ability to write in the written tasks below.
• your ability to understand spoken and written English.

Manjit's Wedding Day pp. 67-72 (textbook): task in the classroom April 3rd

Read and listen to the text. It is a long text, so it is okay if you do not understand everything. However, it is good to check out the words and translations on every page. In small groups (preferably), try to answer these questions: 1) What Punjabi wedding traditions can you read about in the text? Write at least four different wedding traditions. Describe them as well as you can. 2) What was Manjit's plan? Did he go through with the wedding? Why do you think he did the way he did? 3) Was the text hard or easy to understand? What was easy/hard about it? You put the answers here (either by writing them here, or by attaching a document/link).

Love: Falling in Love (pp. 48-49 in the textbook)

- What happens when we fall in love? - What type of "choice" do you think plays the largest role when we fall in love: the physical, the social or the psychological choice? Or do you think all three choices are as important? Why? Explain and give examples!

Swedish Wedding Traditions: task in the classroom.

Read and translate. Do you think these wedding traditions are good or bad? Look at each tradition in groups and discuss what you think of them. Are they fun, weird, necessary, awkward, interesting, dumb, etc.? Why? Put the notes from your discussions here.

American Weddings: task in the classroom March 28

You can also listen to these instructions ("Instructions task in the classroom March 28"). Read "American Weddings" on pp. 64-66. Feel free to also listen to the text. Work individually or, preferably, in small groups (write the names of the group members). It is important that you have at least one book per group! Tasks: 1. Listen to these words in "Webbövningar Wings 9" down below. Then describe them in English: a) engagement b) groom c) elope d) fiancé e) veil f) bridesmaid g) groomsmen h) bride 2. Describe at least three American wedding traditions, according to the text. Explain why they have these specific traditions and/or where they come from. 3. Is it necessary to get married? What do you think in your group? What are the advantages and the disadvantages? Discuss and write down your thoughts. Make sure everyone speaks their mind. Try to write as much as you can about it. 4. If you have time work with the words in "Webbövningar Wings 9>Love>American Weddings" or work with readtheory.org.

A summary of a text

Choose one of the texts in section Love. Summarize it (write what it is about) and write some reflections (one paragraph each): - What is the text about? - What is the purpose of the text? To inform/to entertain/to persuade you into thinking something? - Do you think that the text is interesting? Why/why not?

Reflections on I Love You, Man

Write about 150-200 words on one of these subjects (choose one): 1) Romantic love and friendships. What are some pros and cons with putting your friendships aside when you fall in love? Explain and give examples! Support your answer with at least one example from the movie. 2) Love and Society. Is it more accepted for girls to show that they love each other as friends than it is for boys? Explain and give examples! Support your answer with at least one example from the movie. 3) What is the movie about? What is your opinion of it? Why? Give examples from the movie.

Weddings - your own thoughts

You have discussed wedding traditions and the importance of weddings with your classmates. Now it is time for you to write some reflections on your own. Write a text (not a list, or just answers to the questions) with your own thoughts about this subject. In your TEXT answer the following questions: 1) Do you think it is important for people to get engaged? Why/why not? Explain and give examples. 2) Do you think it is important for people to get married? Why/why not? Explain and give examples. 3) Are there any wedding traditions that you think are more necessary than others? Explain and give examples. 4) Is it important that one gets to choose who to marry, or is it all right if, for example, one's parents choose your bride or groom (spouse) for you? Explain why you think the way you do. Write at least 200 words about this and hand in during the lesson.
