The Dragon's Child

In this unit we will read poems and stories about dragons. We will learn about different text types, develop reading comprehsion and write for a variety of purposes. We will develop sentence starters, grammatical terminology and investigate a variety of spelling patterns in order to develop an awareness of the differences between spoken and written language.

Goals

To be able to read and write a range of text types.

 To develop reading comprehensions; literal and inferential understanding of texts.  

To develop writing skills, by being aware of the text's structure and sentence starters. 

To be able to hear short vowel sounds in  the middle of words and know which letters make these sounds. 

To begin to develop a cursive handwriting style in combination with spelling patterns. 

 

Activities in the Unit Include: 

Active listening activities that involve listening for a purpose.  

Learning songs and rhymes to help memorise vocabulary.

Reading and understanding a variety of  texts e.g poems and stories. 

Recognising common words. e.g first 100/200 common words 

Writing simple texts e.g stories, discussion texts, information texts, descriptions. 

Developing sentence starters (who, how, when, where, why)

Becoming aware of simple grammatical patterns e.g  past tense  

Hearing the short vowel sounds, a, e, i, o, u, in the middle of words and some long vowel sounds e.g ee, oo, ar, 

Exploring words that rhyme and different spelling for the same phoneme. 

Practicing correct letter formation and orientation of lower case letters. 

Retelling stories and events. 

Following instructions.

 

How the Learning  Will be Assessed:

How well you can listen and focus on the information in films, instructions and dialogues.

How well you are able to understand a variety of texts and their content including drawing conclusions from information given. 

How well you recognise the first 100/200 common words. 

How well you can write a variety of texts focusing on the structure in stories and using a variety of sentence starters. 

How well you are able to use the past and present tense depending on the text type. 

How well you can identify sounds in the middle position of words and write the correct letter/s. 

How well you are able to form letters using a cursive style.
