Hairy Maclary

Focussing on the text Hairy Maclary from Donaldson's Dairy by Lynley Dodd we will explore pre-literacy skills such as rhyme and syllabic segmentation, develop narrative skills and create a whole new set of characters and plot! (wk 36 - wk 40).

WK 36: Introduction to the text. The teacher will introduce the book and ask students to guess whether it might be FACT or FICTION (made up or true). Students will be encouraged to name letters appearing in the title and identify the initial phoneme (first sound) of the title words.

We will read the book together and students will begin to explore rhyme.

WK 37: Create a new character. We will read the book again, clapping syllables, identifying rhyme and generating new rhymes. We will summarise the plot and characters through Narrative Teaching Strategies - WHO, WHEN, WHERE, WHAT HAPPENED, THE END. Students will design a new friend for Hairy Maclary and begin to think of a new adventure or plot line for him and his friends. Students must generate ryhme or identify rhyme for their new character. Students will spend some time illustrating their thoughts. The teacher will write their rhyme for them.

WK38: Students will complete their character and develop their storyline and the teacher will record it in writing for them.

WK 39: The teacher will show a short video about dog care. Students will discuss the FACTS they know about dogs and other pets and consider whether these could be incorporated into their new book.

WK40 Students will complete their stories and record themselves 'reading' it.
