The USA/Canada - w.51-8

You will be learning about the USA and Canada. You will individually work with one state and you will get information and learn about Canada from your teacher. We are going to work with this w.51-8.

 Your goals

 

       You will    

• get to know a quite a few things about your state through films and texts

• be able to compare with another state by using the facts you will learn and by using earlier knowledge and own experience

• be well prepared and tell a story – not details - about your state, only with the help of photos in a Power point, using your best language

Way of working   

Seeking and choosing information and facts (during no more than three lessons)

1. Looking for pictures/photos: to illustrate your speaking presentation and make a Power point  (about 10 slides)
2. From texts + 3. from the Internet: about your state, for example:

capital/sights/tourist information/famous places/famous people/nature/culture (e.g. film industry, music industry, fashion industry, food)/history/environment/animals/weather/sports/geography/population/inhabitants/fashion/religion/education (school system)//shopping/local accent/medical  (health) care/ways of living/criminality and or capital punishment (the death penalty)/natural disasters/gun policy/gender issues/immigration/politics/sports/slavery/native people

INSTRUCTIONS - Speaking presentation

You are going to:

• use the basic information from the papers about your state that you received about your state
• choose 2-5 topics (see Seeking and choosing information... above)
• make a Power Point with ONLY PICTURES (= your keywords) and 10 slides
• the presentation should be about 5 min

• create an American character with an American name, address of a place in your state and a photo of “your house” as well as a map of your street

• find 2-3 Crazy laws from your state and present them

• give personal reflections about your state - positive and negative

• compare your state with Canada - use the topics you have chosen

• welcome an exchange student from Canada to ”your home”. She/he will be staying with you in your house and attend the same school as you for 1 year.  Show your exchange student (= the class) your state and your life, teach him/her about important things about your state, as well as tell about what you are going to see and do while she/he is with you through your pictures.

• You also need to write two questions about your state + 4 alternative answers + mark the correct answer. Hand in the questions + answers, which are to be used in a Kahoot (Thursday w.8)

INSTRUCTIONS - Writing a text

You are going to write a text, in which you:

• Compare your state to another state/or states (and/or Canada), as well as Sweden - describe, explain and motivate the reasons for things being similar and/or different. Use the topics you used in your Speaking presentation OR choose new, 2-3 topics, no more!
• Discuss both positive and negative matters, by describing, giving examples and your personal reflections, as well as motivating your thoughts
• Are allowed to have a mind-map while writing the text– but ONLY with keywords with facts (no sentences or phrases)
• Will be writing the text on a paper or computer - the whole lesson. The text should be about 1 page, no more than 1½ page

 

Examination

1. Speaking presentation  The presentation should be about 5 min and is due week 6 or 7.

2. Write a text in which you, describe, give examples and your personal reflections, motivate and compare your state to other states and/or Canada, as well as Sweden. Are due to Thursday w.8.
