It is now time for you to take part in your first school debate, but before you and your team will be arguing for or against a motion we will learn the skills for a successful debate.

 

Syfte

Debating teaches many essential skills and using debates in the classroom can help you grasp many essential critical thinking and presentation skills. The aim with a school debate is to learn abstract and analytical thinking, to distinguishing fact from opinion, practice public speaking, research and find facts which support your arguments, write a speech built on arguments and practice teamwork.

Centralt innehåll

Kommunikationens innehåll:

• Aktuella och för eleverna välbekanta ämnesområden.
• Etiska frågor.
• Åsikter, erfarenheter, känslor och framtidsplaner.

Lyssna och läsa – reception:

• Talad engelska och texter från olika medier.
• Muntliga framställningar.
• Muntlig och skriftlig information samt diskussioner och argumentation.
• Strategier för att uppfatta detaljer och sammanhang i talat språk och texter, till exempel att anpassa lyssnande och läsning efter framställningens form, innehåll och syfte.
• Olika sätt att söka, välja och värdera texter och talat språk på engelska från internet och andra medier.
• Hur texter och talat språk kan varieras för olika syften och sammanhang.
• Hur sammanbindande ord och andra uttryck används för att skapa struktur och språkligt sammanhängande helheter.

Tala, skriva och samtala – produktion och interaktion:

• Olika sätt att bearbeta egna framställningar för att variera, tydliggöra, precisera och anpassa dem efter deras syften.
• diskussioner samt argumentation.
• Språkliga strategier för att förstå och göra sig förstådd när språket inte räcker till, till exempel omformuleringar, frågor och förklaringar.
• Språkliga företeelser för att förtydliga, variera och berika kommunikationen som ut­tal, intonation och fasta språkliga uttryck, grammatiska strukturer och satsbyggnad.

 During this project you will:

• improve your skills when it comes to communication in writing and speaking.
• practise different ways of expressing your thoughts and feelings both in writing and speaking.

Så här kommer vi att arbeta

You will be watching examples of school debates, read different argumentative texts and debate script and practise debating in the classroom. You will, together with your team do researches about your motion to find facts that support your opinion and write your script for the debate and learn about and practise different rhetorical elements. 

Redovisning

In the end of the project we will have a school debate where you and your team will compete with the other teams.

Bedömning

Du ska visa att du, tillsammans med ditt team, kan hålla ett anförande på engelska utifrån strukturen för en debatt. I debatten ska din åsikt vara tydlig och du ska underbygga dina argument med fakta och försöka övertyga lyssnaren om att du har rätt.
