Reading and analysing literature

During this assignment you are going to read a novel. While reading your novel we will have book talks where we discuss different apsects of your novel. We will also watch the movie based on the novel you have read and make comparisons between the novel and the movie.
As part of this assignment we will also talk about formal writing. This will be a preperation for the academic papers that you will write as a final examination of this assignment.

This assignment consists of several parts as described below:

Week 2 

Introduction to the assignment and visit to the school library.

Week 3-6

Reading novels, book talks and watching movies based on the novels. (See assignment called "Book talks" for further instructions.)

Week 7

Comparing novels and movies.

The following talking points will be the base for our discussions as we compare the novel to the movie:

• Did the movie meet your expectations after reading the novel? Why/ why not?

• compare the following aspects; characters, setting, tone, development of the story,

• what are the main differences between the novel and the movie?

• which did you prefer; the novel or the movie? Why?

 Make a first draft for your academic papers, decide what perspective you will focus on. (See seperate assignment for further intsructions)

Week 8-11

Writing an academic paper based on the novel you have read.

Uppgifter

Literary analysis

Write your analysis of the chosen novel according to the following strucure: 1. Introduction: Present the work and make a thesis statement. 2. Main body: Discuss your topic without subjective judgements. Support arguments with reference to the text. 3. Conclusion: Sum up your analysis in relation to the thesis statement. Suggested topics: 1. Main themes. Pick a theme to use as the basis of your analysis, i.e. racism, gender equality or friendship. 2. Characters. Choose a character and try to explain his/her behaviour, how they change, the decisions they make while exploring their relation to other characters in the text. Your analysis is 1-1.5 pages, written with formal language. Good luck!
