The Book Circle - yr 7: w.4-11 2019

Domnarvets skola, Borlänge · Senast uppdaterad: 22 januari 2019

This is a reading project in which every person in the group has the responsibility to accomplish one of four tasks every week - in total eight lessons during w.4-11. To make this task meaningful, interesting and educational, it is of great importance that you fulfil your part every week!!

The different tasks

1) The Leader of the Discussion

a) Lead the discussion

  1. Make sure that everyone reports their task, find out whether anyone has any questions to ask about the text (i.e. if he/she has reacted on something, if the person doesn’t understand or finds anything less good).

  2. Make everyone get the same space when it comes to talking.

  3. Ask if anyone has anything he/she wants to comment on or add to the discussion.

  4. After the present session, you write the summary together with your group members. Open a word document online, share it with your teacher and all your group members. Use the same document all weeks but with different headings (w.5, w.6, a.s.o.).

b) Make a short summary

  1. Of the part read for the meeting of the day, write the summary down in the booklet.

  2. Choose two quotes from the text, reflect on them and give examples from the book to support your choice of quotes and write these down in the booklet as well.

  3. Share your summary, quotes and reflections with the group, but also invite the others to the discussion by asking them of their reflections and opinions.

2) The Phrase-and-Word-Finder + The Illustrator

a) The Phrase-and-Word-Finder

  • Make a list of 5 phrases and 5 words - different/difficult/important/useful.

  • Look them up in a dictionary and write an explanation in English.

  • Copy the phrase-and word-list and hand out to the group members.

  • Prepare an exercise to do with your mates in which you work with your phrases and words so your group members could learn them.

  • OBS! In the end of the book circle there will be a phrase-and-word-test of your 4 lists!

b) The Illustrator

  1. Make a storyboard - draw pictures - of two important settings (places) in the book.

  2. Describe why these two settings are so important – both in writing and speaking.

  3. Support your thoughts with examples from the book and tell the group about your reflections.

3) The Character Examiner

  1. Observe two characters in the text.

  2. Describe them (characteristics, what they like/dislike, their thoughts and opinions, behavior, etc.).

  3. Add two quotes that supports your description of each character.

  4. Compare the two characters to each other, as well as with yourself. Examine similarities and differences and motivate by giving examples from the book and by giving your own reflections and opinions.

4) The Detail Finder

  1. Find at least two details/facts and describe them (e.g. items, music, literature, places).

  2. Write about why each of them is mentioned in the book, how it’s used, etc.

  3. Support your explanations by giving examples from the book.

  4. Give your personal views about the details/facts.
