What to do?
o Look for specific facts about one particular state. Take notes while reading and note down all the sources you use.
o Make a comparison between the state and Sweden. What are the biggest differences and similarities? Comment on your findings.
The presentation must have a proper introduction, main content and importantly an appropriate ending. When using difficult terminology and words, explain them to the audience.
Facts to look for
o When the state was integrated into the union – year, date; any interesting circumstances around it
o Capital city
o Population - the state and the capital city
o Geography – where in the country is the state, neighbouring states, size, topography – eg. mountains, rivers, lakes, deserts etc.
o State symbols such as flower and bird
o Information about main industries (economy)
o Listen to the unofficial anthem, if there is one. Are there similarities to the national anthem the Spangled banner? List the similarities.
o Famous sights, tourism
o Optional information such as: fun facts, high lights and celebrities from the state.
Use your notes and prepare an oral presentation, 5 minutes long, to be held in front of the class. The presentation must include:
- facts about the state
- a comparison with Sweden
- your comments on the differences and similarities
- information about your sources
A powerpoint, or similar, with pictures, maps, drawings etc. highlights and makes the presentation more interesting.
Useful links – there are of course several others you may use as long as you declare them.
