GOALS:
The object of the module is to acquaint you with the historical developments; political, economic, and cultural, within the period leading up to and including the First World War and its aftermath.
You will acquire knowledge and understanding of geographic and economic factors which influenced the development of imperialism in the 19th and early 20th centuries. Further, we will be examining the unification of Germany and Italy in the latter half of the 19th century and the effect of these unifications on the political developments and alliances systems in Europe.
You will acquire knowledge and understanding of the causes and consequences of the First World War and well as an understanding of how and why war was fought, including the analysis of sources to develop critical skills in assessing the validity and trustworthiness of historical documents.
As this is an interdiscplinary module, a key focus will be an integrated understanding of how geography, as well as political and other cultural developments shape and are shaped by historical processes within regions and cultures.
