In this unit, you will learn about the technique that you may usually associate with art - Painting! You will learn how to mix color with a limited palette, to create shade and depth in painted images, and how painting has evolved in Europe since the Middle Ages. At the end of this course you will make your own painting.

We will work with...

  • Exercises where you learn how to mix color and create shadow and depth in a painting
  • Color theory and composition
  • Art history and image analysis, with a focus on European painting from the Middle Ages to today

The lessons will include mostly practical exercises where you will learn how color works, and how to image a three-dimensional object on a two-dimensional surface. The lessons will also include theoretical reviews and exercises.

Target

When you have finished the unit, you are expected to..

  • Know how to mix different colours with a limited palette
  • Be able to paint one or more objects in a realistic way
  • Have done your own painting with acrylic or watercolor
  • Know a few art historical eras and what characterizes them

You will be assessed on...

  • The quality of your painting
  • Your knowledge of the materials and techniques used in painting
  • Your work process
  • Your knowledge of and your ability to analyze art historical images

Practical knowledge, such as the quality of your painting and your work process, is assessed during lesson time as well as the work you submit. Theoretical knowledge, such as art history, is assessed via entrance and exit tickets, checkpoints and in the texts that you will write. Both your theoretical and your practical knowledge are assessed continuously during the course.
