The Legends of Maui

We have been reading The Legends of Maui which is a collection of Maori legends about the demigod, Maui, and certain geographical features of New Zealand. The pupils had mixed feelings about certain other books which I'd read for them, so I turned to this book, knowing that it's very exciting and educational to hear/read. It's important for the pupils to train their ability to listen, to follow a plot and to acquire more vocabulary, and this has proven to be a terrific way of doing that. They've also learned to wait for appropriate moments to ask questions or make comments without interrupting the story.
