Classic Literature

As you know, humankind has always had a thing for writing and telling stories. From cavemen who engraved their stories on cave-walls to today’s “influencers” who post pictures of their food on Instagram. They are all telling a story. Thankfully, people have for a very long time also written their stories on paper, which we can still read today! We will now embark on a journey through English literature history! All in all, we will read a total of nine different stories! Do not worry, they all will be extracts from their original novels; though, not the short stories, they will be in full. I have created a huge mix that will take us from William Shakespeare from the 16th century to a sort of modern song by Eminem. The authors will both be British and American! We will be analyzing and discussing every text that we read; as well as their authors and how the world and the society looked like during the years each author lived, and different literary eras. This all will end in a great two-part test where you will be tested on the facts about the texts and authors and the time in which they lived, as well as analyzing two of the texts.

The authors and texts are the following:

-          William Shakespeare – Romeo and Juliet (late 16^th century)

-          Daniel Defoe – Robinson Cruesoe (early 18^th century)

-          Jane Austen – Emma (early 19^th century)

-          Mary Shelley – Frankenstein (early/mid 19th century)                                                                                                                     

       Charlotte Perkins Gilman - The Yellow Wallpaper (late 19th century)         

       Ernst Hemingway – “Hills like White Elephants” (1927)

-          Kurt Vonnegut - "Harrison Bergeron" (1961)

-          Eminem – “Stan” (2000)

  I want you to be as active as you can during the lesson and try to ask as many questions as you can! This will be loads of fun!
