Media Literacy

This unit focuses on developing our critical thinking skills when it comes to media and advertising. We will look at how we are marketed to, how to identify it, how to analyze it and what laws and protections are in place for us to express ourselves.

• We will read, watch, view and listen to various media sources and comment on them

• A lot of work is group work, but you will be graded individually

• To critically analyze advertising and media information

• To be able to identify marketing

• To understand the differences between political information and propaganda

• To be able to understand and give examples of Freedom of Expression laws and what does not apply to those laws.

• To be able to understand how, when and why someone should be critical of what they hear and see in the media.

Media and Me

Bring in or identify a piece of media that has personally impacted you. Or share a link.

Answer these three questions:

• Did this media in any way shape how you see yourself (gender, race, class, sexuality, etc.)? If yes, give an example.
• Did this media impact your behavior? Did you reenact something you saw? Did you buy something?
• Did this media impact how you see yourself or think about your appearance? This could be in a positive or negative way.

Ya Gotta Have a Gimmick

-You must write down the 4 Ps

-How will your promote this to your demographic? (Who is your target?) THIS NEEDS TO BE DETAILED!! TELL ME WHY YOU MAKE YOUR CHOICES?

-A picture of your product. What does it look like?

-Video, radio or YouTube ads are to be no longer than 60 seconds.

-Maximum of 3 types of ads (For example 1 TV, 1 magazine ad, 1 influencer video).

YOU ARE TURNING IN:

-The picture of your ad/product

-An ad of some kind

-Your detailed promotion plan (minimum half page, maximum front and back)

The WRITING INSTRUCTIONS:

1. For each image, write a few sentences describing the location and explaining the significance of the place. You can either write these directly on the map, on a Word Doc or create a slideshow or video that focuses on each of them one at a time. Think about questions like.

• Why did you choose to highlight this place? What is its significance to you personally and/or to your community?
• How does it relate to your identity?
• Do you feel a sense of belonging or exclusion in this place? If so, what specifically creates that feeling?
• How does this place fit into your broader community?
• Bonus: You may also want to write a bit about what isn’t on the map and why

Now, save your project as a document, physical map, image, pdf, slideshow, or video.
