Reading strategies

How does one think out loud when reading? How do you know what kind of questions to ask about the stories you read? We will use these reading strategies and more to dig deeper into the texts we read.

What are we going to do?

We will read short stories and articles using a closed reading method. We will read each text 3 times and work with the text in a different way each time. All of the text, assignments, and lesson schedules can be found in Classroom. We will work with the first text together as an example. In the second text you will work in pairs, and the third text you will do individually for assessment (bedömning).

 

Purpose

The reason why we are working with reading strategies is so that you will be able to read texts and understand the main idea as well as details of the text. By the third time we read the text, we should also be able to discuss it in-depth and ask questions about the text that can help us read between the lines.

 

Assessment (bedömning)

• Du kan förstå både helhet och detaljer i olika typer av texter.
• Du kan beskriva, diskutera och kommentera på ett välutvecklat sätt innehåll och detaljer i texter. Du följer budskap och instruktioner på ett mycket bra sätt.
• Du kan välja och använda några metoder för att lättare förstå innehållet när du läser.

 

You will read a short story and follow the steps in your final assignment. You will have 2 lessons to complete these steps.

1. Read the story and pick out keywords that would help you retell the story.

2. Write down 5-7 questions that you would pose to the story or your own thoughts about the story. Those "think-out-loud" ideas that come as you read the story to help you better understand it.

3. Take notes to show where you can make a connection (c) to the story and where you have figured out those more difficult "read between the lines" surprises in the story (+). 

4. Answer the questions about the story.

• Eleven visar sin förståelse genom att översiktligt redogöra för, diskutera och kommentera innehåll och detaljer samt genom att med godtagbart resultat agera utifrån budskap och instruktioner i innehållet.
• För att underlätta sin förståelse av innehållet i det talade språket och texterna kan eleven välja och använda sig av någon strategi för lyssnande och läsning.
• Eleven kan förstå det huvudsakliga innehållet och uppfatta tydliga detaljer i lättillgängliga texter i olika genrer.

Reading strategies assessment (bedömning)

Read the story and work with it by following the steps below. You will be expected to read the story 3 times. Hand in your assignment for each reading in Classroom under Klassuppgifter.

1st read

1. Read the entire passage.

2. Circle any words that you do not understand. Make a word list + what the word means. Hand in your word list by the end of the lesson.

3. Highlight 5-10 important words or phrases.

2nd read

Read the entire passage.

Write any interesting observations or notes.

Write any questions you have about the text. For example “ I wonder why…”

3rd read

Read the entire passage.

Write a small c beside ideas you could make a connection with.

Write a + where you were able to add new information to your existing knowledge.

Write a report about the story using the notes you have taken. Discuss the story in written form by answering the following questions:

- What was the story about?

- What was interesting/boring about it and why?

- What connections were you able to make with the story?

- How could you relate to the story or any of the characters?

- What are 5 questions you asked the story?

Hand in your report in Classroom.
