"Elementary, dear students!" - the crime and mystery genre

Varför dras vi människor till det mystiska och fruktansvärda? Varför vill vi läsa om/titta på hemska brott? Varför fascinerad vi av hänsynslösa brottslingar? Detta ska vi under några veckor fördjupa oss i, då vi undersöker detektiv-genren. Sedan kommer vi att fördjupa oss i mer eller mindre kända brottslingar.

Syfte

Du ska utveckla förmågan att 

• Förstå och tolka innehållet i talat språk och olika slags texter.
• Formulera dig och kommunicera i tal och skrift.
• Använda språkliga strategier för att förstå och göra dig förstådd.
• Reflektera över livsvillkor, samhällsfrågor och kulturella företeelser i olika sammanhang och delar av världen där språket används.

Your goals are to:

• Learn more about some famous authors and novels, focusing on the detective genre. 
• Find relevant information about a criminal from an English speaking country on the Internet, in books, movies, radio- or TV-programmes or other sources.
• Write a letter in which you mix personal ideas with the facts that you have found.
• Do an interview - a classmate will interview you and you will interview a classmate. You will come up with questions for both interviews together. You will pretend to be the criminal.

Way of working

• Step 1 (in class): Learn more about Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes, and the works of Agatha Christie. Read texts, discuss and write, and watch a movie based on one of the novels. 
• Step 2 (individual): You are going to find facts/information about a criminal from an English speaking country. You may use books, the Internet, TV shows or movies and decide which information you are going to use.
• Step 3 (individual): You are going to write a letter - pretending to be the criminal you have chosen. The letter is addressed to the victim's family. It shall not be longer than 1 page - A4 and you are going to write in your blue English notebook. You have to explain who you are and why you are writing, your crime/felony/deeds, and preferably ask for forgiveness or/and understanding.
• Step 4 (groups): Prepare a presenation about "your" criminal. Alternatively, you can work together with a classmate and interview each other you while you pretend to be the criminal you have chosen. Present your findings/your intreview to a group of other students.
