Argumentative/Discussing essay

You are going to write two short essays (papers) using the same topic. The aim with this assignment is to make you familiar with the two essay types, and to practice writing.

 

 I have given you the titles for both the argumentative and the discussing essay. Further down you find a chart on how to structure your essays as well as differences and similarities. On page 2 and onwards you find strategies about writing as well as tips and tricks and a checklist. Use them in your writing process. Remember: Use linking words and underline them and also use paragraphs.

 

Use 12 pts. Arial or Times New Roman. 1.15 line spacing. Minimum 300 words and maximum 600 words each essay. 

 

            Argumentative essay: (Purpose – changing the mind of those who are of a different opinion or have no opinion at all.)

 

Headline and thesis: A woman has the right to decide her own way of life!

 

Introduction:  Present your topic. Take a stand with your thesis. See above!

 

Main body: Use three arguments and one counter argument. Give at least one example from the film describing a scene you think is important furthermore feel free to use ideas of your own.

Conclusion: Summarize your ideas briefly and refer to your thesis.

Discussing essay: (Purpose – Describing different views to help the reader to form an opinion.) 

 

Headline and question: Does a woman have the right to decide her own way of life?

 

Introduction: Present your topic. See above.

 

Main body: Explain different views on the topic. Remember, do not take a stand. Give at least one example describing a scene from the film but also feel free to use ideas of your own.  

 

Conclusion: Summarize the different views briefly.

Strategies for successful writing

  • To create a text of good quality, variation, clarity and coherence are important.

 

  • For variation:

  • Use many synonyms.

  • Use different types of sentence structures.

  • Try to create a good balance between long and short sentences.

 

  • For clarity:

  • Plan your texts carefully.

  • Assume your reader does not know as much as you about the subject.

  • Proofread and double check many, many times.

  • Read your text aloud.

  • Ask someone else to proofread your text.

  • Do not use words you do not understand yourself.

 

  • For unity and coherence:

  • Plan the order and structure of your text carefully by using lists or mind maps.

  • Connect your sentences and paragraphs together by using linking words.
